Moon Zappa |
Her father was of Sicilian, Greek-Arab, and French ancestry, and her mother is of French, Irish, and mostly Danish ancestry. Zappa attended Oakwood School in North Hollywood, California. When her father Frank asked her (12-year-old daughter) whether she would like a diaphragm and her own flat to have sex with boys, it was just one more alternative situation for a child named after an astronomical measurement. By the age of 18, Moon Unit was in therapy and has since frequently complained of the problems created by being the offspring of a famous mother or father.
Aside from the novelty of her and her siblings' names, she first came to public attention in 1982, at the age of fourteen, as a vocalist on her father's Top 40 hit single, "Valley Girl". The song presented Moon Zappa delivering a monologue in "valleyspeak", a collection of slang terms loved by teenage girls in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles.
In the mid-1980s, Moon and her brother Dweezil were constant guest VJs on MTV. Beside "Dancin' Fool", "Valley Girl" was Frank Zappa's largest hit in the United States, and popularized expressions such as "grody to the max" and "gag me with a spoon". The tune appeared on her father's 1982 album Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch.
She later created another recording titled "My Mother Is a Space Cadet", with guitar accompaniment by her brother Dweezil.
As a kid, she acted in the tv series CHiPs, The Facts of Life, and the film Nightmares.
She is the writer of the novel America, the Beautiful, publicized in 2001, and articles in major magazines.
In June 2002 Moon married Paul Doucette, ex- drummer and current lead guitarist for American pop group Matchbox Twenty. They have one children, Mathilda Plum Doucette, born December 21, 2004. Zappa filed for divorce in January 2012.
