Frank Zappa's legendary 1971 work 200 Motels will be performed live in concert for the first time in the UK on 29 October 2013, as part of the Southbank Centre's year-long festival The Rest Is Noise.
This colossal piece, one of the most ambitious that Zappa ever wrote, is performed by the full forces of the BBC Concert Orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia, London Voices and a large cast of rock musicians, singers and actors.
Banned from live performance at the time of its composition, and a cult classic on film and on record ever since, 200 Motels can finally be heard on stage in its full glory. The performers include:
Claron McFadden: Soprano
Richard Strange: Narrator, Rance
Ian Shaw: Mark
Brendan Reilly: Howard
Sophia Brous: Groupie 1 (Janet)
Bridget Christie: Good Conscience, Donovan
Jay Rayner: Bad Conscience, Ginger
Scott Thunes: Jeff
Jurjen Hempel: Conductor
BBC Concert Orchestra
Southbank Sinfonia
London Voices
The prize includes an overnight stay in A Room for London, an exclusive hotel room on top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Tuesday 29 October. A Room for London is a major new collaboration between Artangel and Living Architecture, in association with Southbank Centre.
