Howard Kaylan could only have told this story by maintaining a diary (which he did).
The man who sang harmony on "Happy Together" led an amazing life. Kaylan careened through rock n' roll (& pop culture) history for four decades, making friends with Zappa, Hendrix, Lennon, Nilsson, Brian Jones, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry, Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley, Tom Jones, Ramones, Springsteen, Psych Furs and on and on.

Shell Shocked: story of rock-and-roll insanity and success

Names, dates, and spots during the book assist his story of a guy who lived the life of ladies, drugs, and rock and roll. Typed up in such a way you really feel like you're sitting down with him in a coffee shop listening to him tell his life's story.

Kaylan goes into impressive detail concerning The Turtles decade long lawsuit against their record organization White Whale throughout the 70’s to obtain the rights to their recordings along with the band’s name which they at some point did. After their five year run the group broke up but Kaylan and Howard were officially restricted from performing making use of their names in order that they reinvented themselves as The Phosphorescent Leech (Volman) & Eddie (Kaylan) in the near future reduced to Flo & Eddie. They did a stint with their friend Frank Zappa as members of the Mothers of Invention in the very early 70’s. Take a look at “The Mothers of Invention Live at the Fillmore East 1971” or “Just Another Band From LA”.

It is not another one overly romanticized story of how fantastic the old times were, Howard's story has incredibly high highs and really low lows. But it's not all Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll, Howard easily admits when he has made mistakes and how he learned the lessons of them on the way. Pretty much like to say "Yeah, I did this. I'm not happy with it and I know better now but that's what took place."

Shell Shocked will stand alone as not only one of the greatest told music biz memoirs, but one with an absolutely candid and optimum story of rock-and-roll insanity and success from a guy who glories in it all.
