The name of the instrument with which Mr. Duke is probably most directly connected also explains his approach to songs: synthesizer. While he remained a respected figure in the jazz universe, over time he also played keyboards with Frank Zappa and Michael Jackson, sang lead on a Top 20 single and produced pop and rhythm-and-blues hits for others. His work has been sampled by hip-hop and electronic music artists, such as Daft Punk.
"Zappa told me one day that I should play synthesizers,” Mr. Duke wrote on his Internet site. “It was as simple as that!” Recommended by Zappa, he stated, he experimented with a couple of kinds of synthesizers before deciding on the ARP Odyssey, “purely to be different from Jan Hammer, who was playing the Minimoog.” Mr. Hammer was an associate of the guitarist John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, one of the primary jazz-rock fusion groups to achieve widespread achievements.
Zappa chosen Duke for two spells, interrupted by a couple of years during which he toured with Adderley. The keyboard-player contributed to a number of albums central to the Zappa oeuvre, like Chunga's Revenge (1970), the soundtrack of the 200 Motels movie (1971), and the bestselling sequence of Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy & Elsewhere (all 1974), One Size Fits All and Bongo Fury (both 1975) – also with Captain Beefheart.
