Project/Object: Asheville-Dec. 22

For  Andre Cholmondeley, the Zappa sound is too large to vanish.
Zappa would have embraced today’s music and computer technology, Cholmondeley said. Zappa was a visionary who once expected a music distribution system including a phone hook-up to record company and a download to a cassette player. “This was 1980, and he was proposing iTunes,” Cholmondeley said.

And so Cholmondeley plays on with his tribute group Project/Object, performing in Asheville NC again Dec. 22 at the Grey Eagle Music Hall.
Over time Project/Object has performed with nearly twenty of Zappa’s most favored band members. Traveling coast to coast in the USA, Eastern Canada and a half-dozen European nations, the band is beloved by fans everywhere. Every time they perform, Project/Object pleases the Zappa connoisseurs and converts the curious into committed fans.
In that spirit, this show brings together not only guitarist/vocalist Cholmondeley and longtime Project/Object drummer Eric Slick (of Dr. Dog, Adrian Belew Power Trio, Goldbug, etc), but additionally a number of Asheville’s finest players. Derrick Lee Johnson of Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band will perform trombone & vocals, Jamar Woods of The Fritz will be on synth/keys/vocals, and on bass Keith Harry of Deja Fuze. Others TBA!

The emphasize of the evening is the appearance, for the entire evening, of one of Zappa’s most popular and favourite alumni, Denny Walley. Denny’s friendship with P/O goes back almost 20 years, and he has toured with the band, and has been a guest in his hometown of Atlanta, as well as Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville etc. Frequently spotted at shows, such as this upcoming Asheville event, is Denny’s wife, Janet The Planet, well known to all Zappa fans from her cameo onstage in the Baby Snakes movie.

Cholmondeley commonly plays with Zappa sideman Ike Willis, who won’t be on this Grey Eagle show Cholmondeley called a one-off performance. But Walley was on such Zappa-Beefheart albums as “Bongo Furry” and Zappa’s “Joe’s Garage” and knows the material well.
Project/Object: Asheville will be performing Zappa classics from all eras as well as several Zappa tracks most related to Denny Walley, performing the versions he recorded with Frank Zappa or performed with him on tour.

7pm doors, 8pm show. $12 adv, $15 day of show.
