FZ won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance

Frank received multiple Grammy nominations and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1987 for his Synclavier-driven Jazz From Hell album.

FZ:"The night before the Grammys, I was interviewed on CBS. They edited my 12 minutes down to eight. Basically, what I said was, the Grammys are a farce. They wouldn't be so bad if the people who ran them wouldn't try to make them out to be something they aren't. They have nothing to do with merit. The real criteria are record sales or if the person is your friend. They have nothing to do with quality work in music in the United States, but they keep pretending it is something else, and that bothers me.

How much has your Synclavier setup changed since you worked on your 1987 Grammy-winning, Jazz From Hell?
It's completely different. New England Digital  has not only had major software updates, but major hardware updates in the system, as well, and we've pretty much kept up with it. For example, when Jazz From Hell was made, the system I had did not have velocity. In other words, all the notes of all the parts of the tunes were at 100-percent volume. The only way you could get any dynamics was by moving the fader during the mix. And now we have velocity capability, giving you individual volume control over every note. What you can do with the machine now is a lot more realistic and expressive.

In February 2008, Zappa Plays Zappa won Best Rock Instrumental Performance for their performance of the Frank Zappa instrumental classic "Peaches en Regalia".
